When I first stepped onto the path of modern witchcraft, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I remember feeling the sense of anticipation when I first attended a witchcraft class, and feeling that sense that something magical was happening, but I had no way of knowing then, that this would be a path I would stick to for life.
What I found was a rich, living spiritual practice that connects me deeply to the world around me. It’s not just about spells or rituals; it’s about seeing life differently and feeling a sense of belonging, of finding your place in a world that we often feel alienated by. Today, I want to share my five favourite things about practising modern witchcraft as a spiritual path. These are the parts that keep me coming back, that inspire me, and that help me grow as a person, and keep me coming back, even when life gets tough.
Connection to Nature
One of the most powerful draws of modern witchcraft is the connection to nature. It’s not just about enjoying a walk in the woods or admiring a sunset, that we have all started to do a lot more since lock-down. It’s about recognising that nature is alive, sacred, and full of wisdom, and it has its own agency. When I practice witchcraft, I feel like I’m tuning into the heartbeat of the earth itself. I am not one person operating in isolation - I am part of a much bigger whole.
This connection can be as simple as gathering herbs from my garden for a ritual or as profound as casting a circle under the moonlight. It reminds me that I’m part of something much bigger than myself. Nature teaches patience, cycles, and resilience. It’s a constant teacher if you’re willing to listen.
Its also a consolation. I think we can sometime bandy about statements about how healing it is, and I am mindful that, for some of us living with long-term conditions, that can be both problematic and condescending. There's no point in telling someone with a long term condition that they just need more time in nature.
But I find my solace there, when the world gets too much, or I feel like I am battling on too many fronts.
Embracing Animism
Animism is the belief that all things—plants, animals, rocks, rivers—have a spirit or life force. This idea is central to my practice and has changed how I see the world. Instead of viewing nature as a resource to use, I see it as a community to respect and engage with.
When I talk to the trees or thank the river for its flow, I’m not being poetic; I’m recognising the spirit within them. This mindset brings a sense of wonder and responsibility. It’s a reminder that everything is connected and that my actions matter.
If you’re curious about animism, the book Spirit of the Wild by Rebecca Beattie offers gentle guidance on how to start recognising and honouring the spirits around you. It’s a great companion for anyone wanting to explore this path.
Seeing the World as Enchanted
One of the most joyful parts of modern witchcraft is seeing the world as enchanted. This means noticing the magic in everyday moments—the way sunlight filters through leaves, the pattern of stars, or the sudden appearance of a wild animal.
This enchanted view doesn’t require special powers or rituals. It’s about shifting your perspective to find wonder in the ordinary. It makes life feel richer and more meaningful. When you see the world this way, even a simple walk becomes a magical journey.
I often use the Moon Phase Journal from Rebecca Beattie’s collection to track the moon’s cycles and reflect on how they influence my mood and energy. It’s a lovely way to stay connected to the rhythms of nature and feel that enchantment daily.
Honouring the Sacred Feminine
Modern witchcraft often celebrates the sacred feminine, which is about embracing qualities like intuition, creativity, and nurturing. This doesn’t mean it’s only for women. The sacred feminine is a balance to the masculine and is present in everyone.
For me, honouring the sacred feminine means listening to my inner voice and trusting my feelings. It’s about creating space for rest, reflection, and self-care. It’s also about recognising the cycles in nature and in myself, and respecting those rhythms.
This aspect of witchcraft has helped me feel more whole and connected to my own power. It’s a gentle reminder that strength can be soft and that wisdom often comes from within.
Having Agency in Your Own Spiritual Path
One of the best things about modern pagan paths are the freedom they offer. There’s no single way to practice or believe. You get to choose what feels right for you. This agency means you can create a spiritual path that fits your life, your values, and your needs.
I love that I can mix ideas, invent rituals, or simply spend time in nature without any pressure. This freedom encourages creativity and personal growth. It’s empowering to know that your spiritual journey is yours alone. I don't have anyone telling me what I should believe.
If you’re looking for ways to explore your this path, come and find me in one of my online workshops - they are designed to provide supportive spaces to learn and experiment. They’re also focussed on helping you find your own voice and build confidence in your practice.
Modern witchcraft has given me a way to connect deeply with the world and myself. It’s a path full of respect, wonder, and personal power. Whether it’s through nature, animism, or the sacred feminine, this practice invites you to see life differently and take charge of your own spiritual journey.
If you’re curious to explore, start small. Notice the world around you, try a simple ritual, or read a book that speaks to you. The path is open, and the magic is waiting.
Why not take a moment today to step outside and see what the world has to offer? You might be surprised at the magic you find.
